We consider our divisions based upon "mat time." This means that if you have previously wrestled for 3 years in high school or college, with less than 1 year in BJJ/sub grappling, you should compete in the Intermediate division. The reason is that you have 3 years of mat experience with you. It is not fair for competitors who have wrestled in high school/college for 4 years to enter a beginners division, simply because they have minimal experience in submission grappling. When competitors do this, they place an unfair burden upon true beginners who have less than 2 years of experience on the mat.
We keep records of all competitors and winners for our product. If you have won your division two times in our tournament, we request that you move up in your division. For example, if you competed in our tournament under Beginners, and won two tournaments at the Beginner division, we request that you compete in our Intermediate category upon your next entry into our tournament.
It may seem that people will sandbag the Intermediate division simply to win the cash prizes rather than competing in our Advanced division. However, if you compete under Advanced and win your division, you will be automatically placed in our Pro Invitation Only Division. Under this division, you will sign for 1 superfight which will be filmed and released on DVD. You will be pre/post interviewed and have your match featured on the DVD. You will be paid simply for competing in this superfight (win or lose), and also win a cash payment if you win your match. You will also have an opportunity to win further cash prizes for submission victories in your match. We feel that these opportunities for a grappler will prevent them from simply entering a lower division to win a cash prize.
